Intelligent tweeting

I my last post i looked at what is wrong with brands social networking. This time I'm going to give praise to a number of people who have done it right.

I follow a diverse array of people on Twitter. Some friends, some sports people, others industry specific and a handful of musicians. All have their strengths and weaknesses but i want to pay special attention so two particular artists.

Funky Dee (http://twitter.com/FUNKYDEE1) and Gracious K (http://twitter.com/Graciouskisay) are two up and coming artists with a massive following on the club scene. I've danced my drunken arse off to both Funky Dee's "Are you gonna bang doe?" and Gracious K's "Migraine Skank" (complete with the dance)

As a fan i found them on twitter expecting only to find a promotional vehicle for shows and upcoming projects. I was very wrong. Their tweets are funny, insightful and moreover, human. Both interact with their fans regularly (myself included) and post regular updates on their life. Moreover it's easy to see which artists they enjoy and what their interests outside of music are.

By seeing this side of these artists I've invested more time and attention than i normally would. Rather than seeing them as just musicians I've begun to see them as whole people. That is the key to successful marketing through social media, this is true engagement. Evidence of this has been with Gracious K's new single "Casio", on a number of occasions he's utilised the power of his followers to make the single a trending topic and get radio time on BBC 1Xtra. (Not to say it's not a fantastic track)

Naturally this approach wouldn't work for huge companies but smaller independent parties can really take some solid notes from this. I know i have, my social media promotion of myself as a person in advertising and new media has altered dramatically. And you know what? My exposure has doubled. Thanks guys.
